View Dates & BookWhitstable is known for its rich history as a major oyster fishing and trading hub, with a history of oyster cultivation dating back to Roman times. The Oyster Festival pays homage to this with traditional events including the oyster parade, the landing and blessing of the oysters, the ‘mud tug’ and building ‘grotters'.
The town also has a past as a smuggler's haven and was a site for pirate radio stations broadcasting from sea forts built during WWII.
